Fefu and Her Friends

Directed by Tatou Dede

Lead Design by Ellen McCartney

Written in 1977 by Cuban-American playwright María Irene Fornés, Fefu and Her Friends is very notable for it’s use of an entirely female cast and unique staging. Taking place over one afternoon in a New England home (usually set in 1935, though our production was set in 1977), a group of 8 women tackle various issues between themselves and the outside world as the audience cycles through various rooms in Fefu’s home. This play was a unique experience that taught me so much, especially getting to work with a designer like Ellen McCartney. Nishtha Tyagi, the other assistant costume designer, and I got to work with Ellen on the hands on elements of the play, especially with pulling from the CalArts costume storage, sourcing clothing in stores and helping her out in fittings. This was a project I really enjoyed working on, and I’m so proud to have worked on it with the exceptional team we had.
